Alex Payne - Exit Press

I visited Alex Payne at his studio last week to talk about Exit Press his risograph printers, and his upcoming show at Freight gallery. I've been curious about riso printing for awhile and was keen to learn the processes to see if it was something that would work with my own work. Layers of different colours are printed over the top of each other to create interesting works, by varying the opacities of the master copies that are scanned into the printer you can get some really nice results. Alex showed me some zines he'd produced using this technique and they have a much nicer look and feel than digital printing.
Last night was the opening of his solo show 'Head Space' at the newly opened Freight Gallery on Magdalen street. There was a mix of pencil drawings, paintings and sculpture, I loved the gold toaster...yep a gold toaster! Alex has a great style, very expressive and his paintings have an organic flow which I love, some remind me of old tarot cards and others feel tribal. The show is open 11-5 sat and sun so do pop in if you're about town this weekend.
