The Birdcage is at the hub of the Norwich Lanes and for over a decade has been the place to drink for artists, musos and people who love fish ‘n’ chips. If Norwich were Soho the Birdcage would be its French House.

Originally built in 1859, the pub was redesigned in the art deco style in the1930s to look like a steamliner. Formerly known as the Morning Star, the Brown Derby and the Pottergate Tavern it was reopened as The Birdcage in 2006. It is a quirky and fun pub, beloved by both regulars and passers-by, and even has a pub cat, Maraud.

Like any great pub The Birdcage is more than just a pub. It is also a stand-out music venue with Ed Sheeran, Primal Scream, Steve Ignorant and Ben Howard all having played gigs at the downstairs space lovingly called the Ballroom.

Fine ale, wonderful music and, also in the mix, cutting edge art. There are monthly exhibitions curated by our creative in-house team and the walls themselves have been painted by street artists such as The London Police, Millo and Mr Penfold. There is even a weekly life drawing class (BUMS) offering a relaxed setting for all artists, whether beginner or professional.

And if you are feeling peckish (or need to soak up the booze) the award-winning Grosvenor Fish Bar is across the way and you are positively encouraged to take out from The Grosvenor and eat-in at The Birdcage.
